City View United Church
To be a welcoming and inclusive Christian community, growing spiritually and caring for those in need.
Growing our church community by expanding our faith in God, supporting those in need and strengthening community relationships.
Rev. Dr. Karen Boivin, Minister
Thank you for visiting our website! I hope we meet and chat soon. I especially like to discuss experiences of the Holy. I completed a Doctor of Ministry in Reformed Spirituality to encourage that discussion within the Protestant tradition. From those studies I also chose as my guiding passage for ministry Jesus’ words, “I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit.” (John 15: 5 NRSV) It calls me to get out of my own way and instead to promote church life together where we are open to the Spirit and to one another, and where a creative and welcoming environment encourages all ages to explore their gifts for ministry.
In my studies I discovered that it was not unusual for a theologian to present the above verse to mean simply living our lives compassionately as Jesus did in one instance and in another to be a call to a more mystical union. By presenting worship, study, and spiritual practices that connect modern daily life with Scripture I provide the congregation and its individual members with opportunities to explore what it means to them to live their life in Christ and to have Christ’s life be manifested through them.
I have been blessed in my journey of ministry by the loving support of my partner John and our two children. They encouraged me to take the leap from accounting to ministry and were there for me over the years of commuting to school in Kingston and Pittsburgh and as I served in urban, suburban, and rural churches. We are excited to be part of the City View U.C. family and to share in their commitment to explore faith and put it into action.
Jiri Hlavacek, Organist and Choir Director
Music has always been my passion. I was born and raised in Czechoslovakia, but in my mid-adult years I moved to Iceland where I was a conductor, organist and music teacher for 3 years. In 1984 I moved to Canada and came to Ottawa, where I have enjoyed a full and rich life with so many others who love music. I’ve taught music privately and at the high school, led community choirs and band, and for nearly 28 years I also led the choir at City View. With my wife Stanja, a top-rate pianist and music teacher herself, we have enjoyed working with members of our choir over these years and the many performances we have been able to provide. Music has always enriched my life, and, if I may say so, I feel it has greatly enriched the worship services at City View. At least, people keep telling me that!
We always welcome new choir members. For fun, fellowship and the love of great music, you’re invited to join us. I hope the spirit moves you to do so soon!
Mary Lynne Harvey, Office Administrator
I have been a church secretary for 9 years and have always enjoyed being involved with so many different people in this important work. Along with my family and my passion for gardening, I find each new day at work a welcome and fulfilling adventure. I look forward to hearing from you.
I’m so happy and excited to be the Youth Leader and Sunday School Director here at City View. I have extensive experience in youth leadership and children’s programming, both within the United Church and out. I am deeply passionate about creating a safe, welcoming space for children and youth, and helping them grow their relationship with Christ through social activism, liturgical exploration and participation in Sunday worship. A bit about me: I am originally from Wolfville, Nova Scotia, and an economics graduate of McGill University. I love the outdoors, piano, comic books and volunteering my time and talents to best serve my church and my community! Please reach out to me at email@example.com or before/after worship if you have any questions about child/youth programming at City View, or just to say hello!
